The Miracle Staircase in Loretto Chapel

This is the staircase in Santa Fe, New Mexico that Clinton The Great mentioned in his post.

It was built over 100 years ago, by a carpenter who disappeared before he could receive payment for his efforts (so the story goes). It has two full 360 degree turns, and was built in this way to minimise the amount of space used (to leave as much room as possible for the congregation).

The staircase is completely unsupported, held together only by wooden pegs (no nails, brackets etc were used) and by the precision of the workmanship. It is truly an architectural wonder.
